What it is: An old port town that has retained all of its charm - you'll feel like you're going back in time.

Good for: A short weekend trip; only a 40 minute drive north east of San Francisco.

Tip: Book in advance, and go during Memorial Day weekend. There is an annual town-wide yard sale. You'll see tons of vintage treasures as the town comes alive.

Where to stay: The famous Burlington Hotel, which will give you a glimpse of the region's colorful past. Don't forget to get your breakfast pastry and bacon handmade in the light-filled cafe downstairs (only on weekends).

Where to eat: The Bull Valley Roadhouse for delicious southern inspired farm fare and inspired cocktails in a beautiful but not stuffy setting. The Warehouse Cafe for a solid meal in a funky eclectic converted granary attached to a bar. Tip: ask them if they'll let you inside the beer fridge to pick out your beer!
